April 8, 2026: The Council of Canadian Bassoonists is pleased to recognize the lifelong contribution Christopher Weait has made to the world of bassoonists. Chris has been selected as the third recipient of the Council’s Award of Merit for his exceptional achievements and contributions to the development of Canadian bassoonists over many decades.

Whereas, your teaching and mentorship have shaped generations of Canadian bassoonists;

For Canadian bassoonists, Chris Weait is one of those rare figures whose influence has been felt in almost every corner of our musical lives. He has been an outstanding orchestral player, a prolific and imaginative composer, a gifted teacher, and a mentor whose impact has extended across generations of bassoonists in this country.

Chris served for seventeen years as co-principal bassoonist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, performing under Seiji Ozawa, Karel Ančerl, and Sir Andrew Davis. During that time, he helped set a standard of orchestral bassoon playing in Canada that inspired both colleagues and younger players who were listening closely. He was also an active and important presence in Toronto’s chamber music scene, including through ensembles such as the Toronto Winds, the Toronto Baroque Trio, the Canzona Trio, and the Toronto Chamber Winds, which he founded. 

Chris’s contribution to the Canadian bassoon community extends far beyond performance. From 1973 to 1984, he taught at the University of Toronto, where he helped shape a generation of young players during a particularly important period in the development of bassoon playing in Canada. His influence has continued through his students, his masterclasses, his writing, and the many musicians who have carried his ideas, standards, and musical values into their own performing and teaching careers. 

As a composer and arranger, Chris has given our instrument an extraordinary gift. His catalogue includes nearly one hundred works, along with a wide range of arrangements and pedagogical materials that have enriched the bassoon repertoire and given players practical, musical tools they continue to rely on. 

And then there are the Warm-Ups. For countless Canadian bassoonists, Chris’s Bassoon Warm-Ups have been part of daily life for years — perhaps decades. They have helped countless young Canadian bassoon players, and just as many not-so-young Canadian bassoon players, to rehearse, prepare, and perform with confidence. For many of us, they have been a constant companion: something we have turned to in lessons, in practice rooms, backstage, and before auditions and concerts. If you have spent any serious time with the bassoon in Canada, chances are Chris has been in the room with you, whether in person or on the music stand. 

His pedagogical legacy also includes important resources such as Bassoon Reed-Making: A Basic Technique and Bassoon Strategies for the Next Level, publications that have helped students and professionals alike develop the technical and musical confidence to meet the instrument on its own terms.

What makes Chris so special to the Canadian bassoon community is not simply the breadth of his accomplishments, impressive though they are. It is the way his work has entered the day-to-day lives of bassoonists across this country: in the orchestra, in the studio, in the practice room, in the reed desk, and in the teaching lineage that continues to shape our community.

His legacy is not abstract. It is audible, practical, and deeply personal to many of us. The Council of Canadian Bassoonists is proud to present the 2026 Award of Merit to Christopher Weait, in grateful recognition of his outstanding artistry, his remarkable contributions as a composer and teacher, and his lasting impact on generations of Canadian bassoonists.
