Laurier Double Reed Day 2024
Join us on Saturday, February 24 for Laurier’s Double Reed Day, hosted by Laurier faculty Ari Cohen Mann and Kathleen McLean, featuring esteemed guests, bassoonist Jeff Lyman and oboist Nancy Ambrose King from the University of Michigan.
This event celebrates wind playing at all levels, from students, amateurs, to professionals, exploring the world of double reed performance. Against the backdrop of Laurier’s cutting-edge facilities, it’s a unique opportunity to showcase our newly renovated Savvas Chamberlain Music Building.
Fundamentals and warm-up classes will be led by our own faculty members, focusing on how to improve your technique efficiently and productively. Additionally, this class will help in developing a reliable warm-up to prepare you for anything!
Guest classes by Jeff Lyman and Nancy Ambrose King will feature students working on solo repertoire and excepts.
We will have vendors including Jimboe Products Inc. if you’re looking for your next oboe or English horn, Oboerific Reeds for your gouger, processed cane, and reed needs and Blackwood Double Reed Supplies Inc. for everything else you may need for reed-making.
Nancy Ambrose King
Nancy Ambrose King, oboe, is the first-prize winner of the Third New York International Competition for Solo Oboists, held in 1995. She has appeared as soloist throughout the United States and abroad, including performances with the St. Petersburg, Russia, Philharmonic, Prague Chamber Orchestra, Janacek Philharmonic, Tokyo Chamber Orchestra, Puerto Rico Symphony, Orchestra of the Swan in Birmingham, England, Festival Internacionale de Musica in Buenos Aires, New York String Orchestra, Amarillo Symphony, Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, and Sinfonia da Camera. She has performed as recitalist in Weill Recital Hall and as soloist at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. She has recorded eleven CDs of works for the oboe on the Boston, Cala, Equilibrium, Naxos and Centaur Record labels. Recent releases include “IllumiNation” featuring concertos by Scott McAllister, Michael Daugherty, and Alyssa Morris; the “Halle” Trio Sonatas of G.F. Handel; “Global Reflections” recorded with the Prague Chamber Orchestra and featuring the works of Strauss, Skalkottas, Sierra, and Foss, as well as the premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s Oboe Concerto with the University of Michigan Symphony Band. She can also be heard performing on the Athena, Arabesque, and CBS Masterworks labels, as well as the Youtube channel, “Trois Trios/Deux Duos” with colleagues Jeffrey Lyman, bassoon and Martin Katz, piano. She was a finalist in the Fernand Gillet Oboe Competition held in Graz, Austria, and was a member of the jury for the esteemed 2009 Barbirolli and the 2016 Muri, Switzerland Oboe Competitions. She has appeared as a recitalist throughout the world, on WQXR radio in New York City and NPR’s “Performance Today”. Ms. King has written a highly successful e-book for Apple I-Tunes titled “Making Oboe Reeds from Start to Finish with Nancy Ambrose King.”
Her playing has earned high praise from a variety of critics, including the American Record Guide: “Marvelously evocative, full of character, sultry and seductive, with a soft-spoken, utterly supple tone, and as musically descriptive as any I have heard…a fine exhibition of thoroughly musical oboe playing”; “She plays not only with delicacy, but also with an intense, almost rapturous sound that is second to none in expressivity and gradation. Delightful!”. “…a lovely player with a tone that surpasses that of most other American oboe soloists. It defines delicacy, yet is strangely assertive, like a soft-spoken woman who nonetheless speaks up strongly when her mind is made up”, Fanfare: “Nancy Ambrose King is clearly a skilled musician of great promise, with a sterling technique”, and The Double Reed: “…thoughtful, expressive, and perfectly controlled performance of consummate accuracy. It’s not that she makes it sound easy-she makes it sound perfect”, “Ms. King’s fluid technique, combined with clean and accurate articulations, makes the most complex passages flow and sounds effortless. Combine these aspects with a beautiful tone and a sensitive touch in the lyrical passages, all oboists have a new level to which to strive.”
Currently Professor of Oboe at the University of Michigan, she was elected as the first female President of the International Double Reed Society. She is on the faculty of the Sarasota and Round Top Music Festivals, as well as the Michigan City Chamber Music Festivals during the summer. She was previously Associate Professor and University Scholar at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and has also served on the music faculties of Indiana University, Ithaca College, University of Northern Colorado, and Duquesne University Schools of Music, as well as the Ostrava (Czech Republic) Oboe Festival, Bowdoin, Sewanee, Marrowstone, Hot Springs Music Festivals, and Strings in the Mountains of Steamboat Springs.
Professor King received her Doctor of Musical Arts, Master of Music, and Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music, studying with Richard Killmer. A graduate of the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Music degree where she studied with Arno Mariotti and Harry Sargous, Ms. King was the recipient of the school’s prestigious Stanley Medal upon graduation, and was honored with the 2010 Hall of Fame Award and the 2018 Harold Haugh Teaching Award by the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance.
Jeffrey Lyman has established himself as one of the premier performers, teachers, and historians of the bassoon in the U.S. He has been professor of bassoon at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance (SMTD) since 2006, and, prior to that, held positions at Arizona State University and Bowling Green State University. His principal teachers include Bernard Garfield of the Philadelphia Orchestra and Richard Beene and Hugh Cooper of the University of Michigan (U-M). He holds an undergraduate degree from Temple University and his MM and DMA from U-M. He has been a member of numerous orchestras across the country and has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Opera Company of Philadelphia, the Savannah Symphony, the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus, the Grand Rapids Symphony, and the Michigan Opera Theatre, to name a few.
Lyman performs annually at the conferences of the International Double Reed Society and is a popular clinician at bassoon master classes around the world. He has given master classes and guest recitals at McGill University, USC, the Curtis Institute, the Eastman School, the Tchaikovsky Conservatory (Moscow), Florida State University, Rice University, and many others. In summers, he runs the MPulse Bassoon Institute, an intensive week-long program for high school bassoonists held at the SMTD’s Earl V. Moore Building.
Lyman is also known as an author and advocate of new music and has many publications and commissions to his credit. A member of the Rushes Ensemble, he was one of a consortium of bassoonists to commission, record and perform the groundbreaking work Rushes by Michael Gordon, and has toured Europe and the US in support of that work. Lyman has released multiple editions of works from the 19th and 20th centuries as part of the Jeffrey Lyman Edition at TrevCo Music Publishing, including the first English translation of the Nouvelle Méthode de Basson by Étienne Ozi, the first complete method for bassoon.
Dr. Lyman maintains an extensive YouTube channel filled with live videos of his concerts and of multiple degree recitals by members of the U-M Bassoon Studio. A second channel, the Katz-King-Lyman Trio, features video performances of music for oboe, bassoon and piano. He appears on Canteloupe Records, Summit, Le Chant du Monde, New World, Brasswell, Koch International and BlockM recordings.
A proud Canadian, born in Saskatoon, I am serving as Musician in Residence for Woodwinds. Previously to being on faculty at Wilfrid Laurier University, I was associate professor of Bassoon at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University and for several years before that held the position as associate principal Bassoon with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and principal bassoon with the Canadian Opera Company.
Chamber music has always been a major part of my musical journey. I have been a member of the Toronto Wind Quintet, Caliban Quartet of Bassoons, Otagon Chamber Ensemble, Chamberworks, New Music Ensemble and have performed with Toronto’s Amici Ensemble and Camerata Pacifica.
I have had the great honor of performing and touring with some of the finest orchestras and conductors from around the world; World Orchestra for Peace, Boston Symphony, London Symphony (UK), National Arts Center Orchestra, Montreal Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony.
As a pedagogue and performer, I have been very active in performing and premiering and recording several new concertos and chamber repertoire at the International Double Reed Society, and have been active with judging major bassoon competitions and offering master classes and recitals in numerous cities across North America.
As a long time faculty member with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, I have enjoyed working as both an orchestral and chamber coach and as an online mentor for the Curtis Institute of Music.
Ari Cohen Mann
I’m passionate about advancing the oboe as a solo voice in recitals and chamber music. I made my solo debut at Carnegie Hall in 2016, was a prize-winner at the OSM Manulife Competition 2014, and won the Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition 2013. I’ve premiered solo and chamber works by Jocelyn Morlock, Nicky Sohn, and Matthew Emery.
In the orchestral realm, I have appeared with the Canadian Opera Company, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the National Ballet of Canada Orchestra, Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Symphony Orchestras of Kingston, Kitchener-Waterloo, Niagara, Toronto, and Windsor. I proudly serve as a mentor for the National Academy Orchestra of Canada.
I’ve had the privilege to work with many conscientious students as they successfully take on the challenges associated with auditions, exams, and competitions. In addition to my robust private studio, I’ve taught masterclasses and given lectures at universities, arts high schools, and music academies throughout North America. I previously held the position of Oboe Instructor at Yale University.
I earned my Artist Diploma from Yale School of Music, my MMus at Mannes School of Music, and my BMus at the University of British Columbia where I was awarded the UBC Medal in Music.
In the evening, we’ll close out the day with a thrilling evening performance of works by Pasculli, Kirsch, Damase, Boutry, Jacobi, and Grandval. Both of our esteemed guest artists will perform along side our own double reed faculty members.
