Congratulations to Kendal Morrisone and Jérôme Poulin!

Kendal Morrison is a bassoonist from London, Ontario, and is currently completing her Bachelor of Music at the University of Toronto with Eric Hall.  Since beginning the bassoon in 2018, Kendal has received several awards and opportunities to further her musical pursuits.  She recently completed her second summer with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, and has been a member of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Lond Youth Symphony.  Additionally, Kendal has performed as a soloist with the London Youth Symphony and the London Community Orchestra.  Also active as a freelancer, Kendal regularly performs with the Stratford Symphony Orchestra, the Niagara Symphony Orchestra, and various other groups throughout Southern Ontario.

“I’m greatly honoured to received the 2026 Frank Marcus Awards – thank you so much to the Council of Canadian Bassoonists and everyone who made this possible.  These funds will be incredibly valuable in supporting my studies, reed equipment, and future professional auditions!”

“My name is Jérôme Poulin. I’ve been studying the bassoon for five years, and I’m currently at the Music Conservatory of Quebec City in the studio of Mélanie Forget.

I was introduced to music at a young age, inspired by my parents who are both musicians. When I was 10, I started playing the drums. After a year, I transitioned to the clarinet, which I enjoyed, though I returned to the drums in my first year of secondary school at La Camaradière. During that same year, I also played the viola.

When I was 13, my teacher at the conservatory started teaching bassoon for beginners that have never played. I decided to give it a try and fell in love with the instrument. Since secondary two, my goal has been clear: I want to become a professional bassoon player.

I wouldn’t have come this far without the support of my family, my loved ones, and the conservatory, which generously provided me with an instrument. In the coming years, I hope to join the National Youth Orchestra of Canada and compete in national competitions, such as the Canadian Music Competition. I would also love to study abroad to refine my technique and continue growing as a musician.

Thank you to everyone who supported me, and a special thank you for the Frank Marcus Award. You have all my gratitude.”
